Some research books on the Now Publishers website are published fully Open Access, as gold Open Access. Gold Open Access makes the final version of a book manuscript freely and permanently accessible for everyone, immediately after publication. Gold Open Access books are published under the terms of a non-commercial Creative Commons license (CC-BY-NC), which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any non-commercial medium, provided the original work is properly cited.
Authors and editors are able to share the content and upload this to repositories of choice, including their personal websites. Authors and editors retain the copyrights to all their content published as Open Access. Print copies of books for which the e-book is published as Open Access are available for purchase, and authors and editors will continue to receive royalties over print book sales.
Gold Open Access book content is supported by a Book Processing Charge (BPC), paid by the Author, Editor or their funder. These charges are calculated to contribute to the costs associated with the publication process of the submitted manuscript, online hosting and dissemination of the published e-book. In this way the charges cover editorial work, the technical infrastructure, production of manuscripts, marketing of the content and customer service.
Now Publishers believe that we should publish based on the quality of the work rather than the authors’ ability to pay. The editorial process – including the decision whether or not to publish the work – is independent of the author’s and editor’s decision to publish gold Open Access.
Open Access books are identified on our website by the “nowOpen” icon next to the title (in green) and a download button (in white).
Only authors and editors of books accepted after review and submission are charged a Book Processing Charge (BPC), and the payment process begins after the manuscript has been accepted for production.
The minimum Book Processing Charge (BPC) for Now Publishers books is USD 6000 (excluding any applicable VAT or local sales tax), for a monograph of between 200-400 pages. The Book Processing Charge (BPC) for shorter or larger monographs and edited volumes may be respectively lower or higher. Authors and editors are invited to contact their publisher at Now Publishers in order to discuss and evaluate the Book Processing Charge (BPC) on a case-by-case basis.
All Open Access books are subject to peer-review prior to publishing. After receiving a new book proposal, the proposals are reviewed by an expert from the community for appeal and scientific relevance, and whether the topic falls within the scope of the relevant nowOpen program. Book authors and editors are sent the review comments for their information and comments where necessary and required. Full manuscripts are checked for plagiarism matters, and thereafter the chapters are reviewed
